## Abstract

A soft tissue fixation system, most typically applicable to orthopedic joint repairs, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee repair procedures, comprises an implant which is placeable in a tunnel disposed in a portion of bone, wherein the tunnel is defined by walls comprised of bone. A first member is deployable outwardly to engage the tunnel walls for anchoring the implant in place in the tunnel, and a second member is deployable outwardly to engage tissue material to be fixed within the tunnel. The second member also functions to move the tissue material outwardly into contact with the tunnel walls to promote tendon-bone fixation. Extra graft length is eliminated by compression of the tendon against the bone at the aperture of the femoral tunnel, which more closely replicates the native ACL and increases graft stiffness. The inventive device provides high fixation of tendon to bone and active tendon-bone compression. Graft strength has been found to be greater than 1,000 N (Newtons), which is desirable for ACL reconstruction systems.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An anchoring system for securing soft tissue in a bone, comprising:
an anchor body positionable in a tunnel formed in a bone, the anchor body having a distal end, a proximal end, and a longitudinal axis;
a first arm on the anchor body, the first arm located at the distal end of the anchor body and being outwardly deployable relative to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body for engaging a wall in the tunnel for anchoring the anchor body in the tunnel;
a first compression pad on the anchor body, the first compression pad located at the proximal end of the anchor body and being outwardly deployable relative to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body for moving soft tissue that is situated between the first compression pad and the wall in the tunnel away from the longitudinal axis of the anchor body for compressing the soft tissue against bone in the tunnel;
a distal deployment element movable inside the anchor body in a proximal direction for contacting the first arm with the distal deployment element to thereby force the first arm to deploy outwardly relative to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body; and
a proximal deployment element movable inside the anchor body in a distal direction for contacting the first compression pad with the proximal deployment element to thereby force the first compression pad to deploy outwardly relative to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The anchoring system of claim 1 further comprising a second arm on the anchor body, wherein the second arm is located at the distal end of the anchor body and is outwardly deployable relative to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body for engaging the wall in the tunnel for anchoring the anchor body in the tunnel.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The anchoring system of claim 2, wherein the second arm is separated from the first arm on the anchor body.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The anchoring system of claim 1 further comprising a second compression pad on the anchor body, the second compression pad located at the proximal end of the anchor body and being outwardly deployable relative to the longitudinal axis of the anchor body for moving soft tissue that is situated between the first compression pad and the wall in the tunnel away from the longitudinal axis of the anchor body for compressing the soft tissue against bone in the tunnel.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The anchoring system of claim 4, wherein the second compression pad is separated from the first compression pad on the anchor body.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)
