Abstract
Based on a packet processing requirement of a client, a parameter set is generated at a first node of a flow management system, indicating a number of outbound packets to be generated per received packet of a flow and/or a source address substitution rule to be applied to received packets. A packet rewriting directive corresponding to the parameter set is transmitted from the first node to a different node where received packets are transformed according to the parameter set.
Claims20
A multi-tier network flow management system, comprising:
- one or more nodes of a rewriting decisions tier;
- and a plurality of nodes of a packet transformation tier, including a first node and a second node;
- wherein a particular node of the rewriting decisions tier is configured to:
- determine, corresponding to a first packet processing requirement of a client, a first packet rewriting parameter set comprising one or more of:
- (a) a payload replication parameter indicating a number of outbound packets to be generated corresponding to a packet received at the flow management system, or (b) a source address substitution rule for outbound packets, or (c) a destination selection rule;
- determine, corresponding to a second packet processing requirement, a second packet rewriting parameter set, wherein the second packet rewriting parameter set differs from the first packet rewriting parameter set in at least one parameter;
- generate a first packet rewriting directive in accordance with the determined first packet rewriting parameter set;
- generate a second packet rewriting directive in accordance with the determined second packet rewriting parameter set;
- initiate a transmission of the first packet rewriting directive to the first node of the packet transformation tier and the second packet rewriting directive to the second node of the packet transformation tier;
- and
- wherein the first node of the packet transformation tier is configured to:
- transmit, corresponding to at least one received packet of a particular network flow associated with the first packet processing requirement, one or more outbound packets to respective destinations in accordance with the first packet rewriting parameter set, wherein the particular network flow is distinguishable from other network flows based at least in part on one or more header elements of inbound packets;
- and
- wherein the second node of the packet transformation tier is configured to:
- transmit, corresponding to at least one received packet of a different network flow associated with the second packet processing requirement, one or more outbound packets to respective destinations in accordance with the second packet rewriting parameter set.
A method, comprising:
- determining, at a particular node of a network flow management system, based at least in part on an indication of a packet processing requirement of a client, one or more of:
- a number of outbound packets to be generated corresponding to a packet of a particular network flow received at the network flow management system;
- or
- a source address substitution rule;
- generating, at the particular node, a packet rewriting directive in accordance with said determining;
- and
- initiating, from the particular node, a transmission of the packet rewriting directive to a different node of the network flow management system at which packets of the particular network flow are to be processed according to the packet rewriting directive and transmitted toward respective destinations for the respective packets of the particular network flow,
- wherein, for another network flow, the method comprises the particular node of the network flow management system:
- generating another packet rewriting directive;
- and
- initiating a transmission of the other packet rewriting directive to another node of the network flow management system at which other packets are processed according to the other packet rewriting directive and transmitted toward respective destinations for the respective other packets of the other network flow.
A non-transitory computer-accessible storage medium storing program instructions that when executed on one or more processors implement a node of a flow management service, wherein the node is configured to:
- determine, based at least in part on an indication of a packet processing requirement of a client, one or more of:
- a number of outbound packets to be generated corresponding to a packet of a particular network flow received at the flow management service;
- or
- a source address substitution rule;
- generate a packet rewriting directive in accordance with the determination;
- and
- initiate a transmission of the packet rewriting directive to a different node of the network flow management service at which packets of the particular network flow are to be processed according to the packet rewriting directive and transmitted toward respective destinations for the respective packets of the particular network flow,
- wherein, for another network flow, the node is configured to:
- generate another packet rewriting directive;
- and
- initiate a transmission of the other packet rewriting directive to another node of the network flow management service at which other packets are processed according to the other packet rewriting directive and transmitted toward respective destinations for the respective other packets of the other network flow.
