Abstract
The present invention provides therapeutic and prophylactic compositions for use in treating and preventing disorders involved epithelial cell apoptosis, such as gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis) in a subject, such as a human patient.
Claims12
A method of treating a gastrointestinal disease in a subject, comprising administering to the subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising a Lactobacillus protein having the properties of
- (a) stimulates PI3K-dependent Akt activation;
- (b) inhibits cytokine-induced epithelial cell apoptosis;
- (c) promotes epithelial cell growth;
- and
- (d) an apparent molecular weight of 40 kDa or 75 kDa as determined by SDS-PAGE at 90% purity of the Lactobacillus protein.
