Abstract
Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, an antenna system that includes a plurality of dielectric members configured to propagate first guided electromagnetic waves. A dielectric antenna array is configured to receive the first guided electromagnetic waves and to transmit a controllable beam in response thereto. Other embodiments are disclosed.

An antenna system comprising:
- a multi-core transmission medium that facilitates propagation of electromagnetic waves guided via a plurality of dielectric cores;
- a selector coupled to the plurality of dielectric cores, wherein the selector selectively launches first electromagnetic waves on a selected dielectric core of the plurality of dielectric cores, wherein the selected dielectric core corresponds to one of the plurality of dielectric cores, wherein the first electromagnetic waves propagate along the selected dielectric core without requiring an electrical return path, and wherein the first electromagnetic waves are launched by at least one launcher coupled to the selector;
- and
- a dielectric antenna array, coupled to the plurality of dielectric cores, the dielectric antenna array comprising a plurality of dielectric antennas, wherein a first dielectric antenna of the plurality of dielectric antennas transmits, in response to the first electromagnetic waves received from the selected dielectric core, a controllable beam.

A method comprising:
- selectively launching, by a selector, guided electromagnetic waves on a selected dielectric core of a plurality of dielectric cores of a transmission medium, wherein the selected dielectric core corresponds to one of the plurality of dielectric cores, and wherein the guided electromagnetic waves are launched by at least one launcher coupled to the selector;
- propagating the guided electromagnetic waves via the selected dielectric core of the plurality of dielectric cores to at least one of a plurality of dielectric antennas, wherein the guided electromagnetic waves propagate along the selected dielectric core without requiring an electrical return path;
- and
- transmitting a controllable beam through a dielectric lens via the at least one of the plurality of dielectric antennas in response to the guided electromagnetic waves received from the plurality of dielectric cores.

An antenna system comprising:
- a plurality of dielectric members that facilitates propagation of first guided electromagnetic waves without an electrical return path at non-optical frequencies, wherein the first guided electromagnetic waves are launched by one or more launchers coupled to the plurality of dielectric members;
- a selector coupled to the plurality of dielectric members, wherein the selector selectively launches the first guided electromagnetic waves on a selected dielectric member of the plurality of dielectric members, wherein the first guided electromagnetic waves propagate along the selected dielectric member without requiring an electrical return path, and wherein the selected dielectric member corresponds to one of the plurality of dielectric members;
- and
- a dielectric antenna array that facilitates receiving the first guided electromagnetic waves from the plurality of dielectric members and to transmit a controllable beam through a dielectric lens in response thereto.
