Abstract
Integrated antenna structures described herein may include planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) integrated with artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) metamaterials. The integrated metamaterial operatively coupled with the PIFA may function as an artificial magnetic reflector, sending all the energy radiated upwards, and thereby changing the original omnidirectional radiation pattern of the PIFA to a directional radiation pattern. The integrated antenna structures that include PIFAs and metamaterials may maintain a smaller form factor as compared to similar directional antennas, while exhibiting a suitable performance in terms of radiation efficiency, radiation pattern and impedance bandwidth.

An antenna structure comprising:
- a printed circuit board (PCB) comprising a top surface, a bottom surface, a first inner layer, and a second inner layer;
- a planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) disposed over the top surface and the bottom surface;
- and
- an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) cell comprising a backing metal layer defining the first inner layer and an AMC metal layer defining the second inner layer, wherein the AMC layer is configured to reflect energy radiated by the PIFA.
An apparatus for providing 3-dimensional pockets of energy through pocket-forming, the apparatus comprising:
- a printed circuit board (PCB) comprising a top surface, a bottom surface, a first inner layer, and a second inner layer;
- a plurality of planar inverted F antennas (PIFAs), wherein each of the PIFAs is disposed over the top surface and the bottom surface of the PCB;
- and
- a plurality of artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) cells, wherein each of the AMC cells comprising a backing metal layer defining the first inner layer and an AMC metal layer the second inner layer, wherein each of the AMC layers is configured to reflect energy independently as radiated by each of the PIFAs to enable pocket-forming of energy.
A cell arrangement comprising:
- an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) cell arranged in a multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB), wherein the PCB comprising a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the AMC cell comprises:
- a backing metal layer defining a first inner layer of the PCB;
- a planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) disposed over the top surface and the bottom surface;
- and
- an AMC metal layer defining a second inner layer of the PCB, wherein the AMC layer comprising a metamaterial.
