D2D traffic balancing

A network device for balancing device-to-device (D2D) traffic in a communications network, the network device comprising a processing unit, the processing unit being configured to cause the network device to:

• acquire information indicating that a first set of D2D capable wireless devices is present in the communications network;
• acquire D2D traffic information of the first set of D2D capable wireless devices;
• and
• adapt D2D traffic within the communications network, between a first cell on a first carrier and a second cell on a second carrier in the communications network, based on the D2D traffic information, thereby balancing D2D traffic in the communications network,
• wherein how to adapt the D2D traffic is based on an outcome of a comparison of the D2D traffic information to a threshold, and
• wherein the threshold is based on at least one of:
• number of wireless devices in the first set,
• number of other wireless devices in the cell, and
• fraction of resources configured for D2D operation on sidelinks of each of the first carrier and the second carrier.

A nontransitory computer readable storage medium comprising a computer program for balancing device-to-device (D2D) traffic in a communications network, the computer program comprising computer code which, when run on a processing unit of a network device, causes the network device to:

• acquire information indicating that a first set of D2D capable wireless devices is present in the communications network;
• acquire D2D traffic information of the first set of D2D capable wireless devices;
• and
• adapt D2D traffic within the communications network, between a first cell on a first carrier and a second cell on a second carrier in the communications network, based on the D2D traffic information, thereby balancing D2D traffic in the communications network,
• wherein how to adapt the D2D traffic is based on an outcome of a comparison of the D2D traffic information to a threshold, and
• wherein the threshold is based on at least one of:
• number of wireless devices in the first set,
• number of other wireless devices in the cell, and
• fraction of resources configured for D2D operation on sidelinks of each of the first carrier and the second carrier.
