Abstract
An adhesive composition containing cottonseed protein, and one or more of the following components: (i) soy protein, (ii) a polysaccharide, and (iii) at least one modifier selected from a carboxylic acid, a dicarboxylic acid, a phosphorus-containing acid or ester, a cationic amino acid, a quaternary ammonium salt, or mixtures thereof.
Claims27
An adhesive composition, said adhesive composition comprising cottonseed protein, optionally soy protein, and one or more of the following components:
- (i) a polysaccharide selected from the group consisting of hemicellulose, starch, cellulose, and mixtures thereof, (ii) a carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, butyric acid, and adipic acid, (iii) a phosphorus-containing acid or ester, (iv) an amino acid selected from the group consisting of aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and arginine, (v) choline chloride, and mixtures thereof.
A process for producing an adhesive composition, said process comprising mixing cottonseed protein and one or more of the following components:
- (i) soy protein, (ii) a polysaccharide, and (iii) at least one modifier selected from the group consisting of a carboxylic acid, a dicarboxylic acid, a phosphorus-containing acid or ester, a cationic amino acid, a quaternary ammonium salt, and mixtures thereof, and optionally (iv) at least one member of the group consisting of water, plasticizer, and mixtures thereof.
A method of bonding a first article to a second article, said method comprising (a) producing an adhesive composition by mixing cottonseed protein, optionally soy protein, and one or more of the following components:
- (i) a polysaccharide selected from the group consisting of hemicellulose, starch, cellulose, and mixtures thereof, (ii) a carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, butyric acid, and adipic acid, (iii) a phosphorus-containing acid or ester, (iv) an amino acid selected from the group consisting of aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and arginine, (v) choline chloride, and mixtures thereof, and optionally (vi) at least one member of the group consisting of water, plasticizer, and mixtures thereof, at a pH of about 4 to about 12 and at a temperature of about 20° to about 60° C.;
- (b) depositing on a surface of said first article said adhesive composition thereby creating a binding area;
- and (c) contacting said binding area with a surface of said second article;
- and (d) applying heat and pressure to bond said first article to said second article.
An adhesive composition, said adhesive composition comprising cottonseed protein, optionally soy protein, and one or more of the following components:
- (i) a phosphorus-containing ester selected from the group consisting of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, sodium monododecyl phosphate, diethyl phosphite, and mixtures thereof, (ii) arginine, (iii) choline chloride, and mixtures thereof.
