Abstract
A mixing signal processing technique modifies digital audio recordings to simulate the linear and nonlinear effects of propagation and mixing of sounds in air. When multiple sounds or complex sounds comprised of multiple frequencies in the audible spectrum propagate in such a nonlinear medium, they transfer energy into sound at new frequencies given by the sums and differences of the original signal frequencies. The mixing signal processing technique may improve the ability of a system to reproduce the effects of a live performance using a digital audio recording.
Claims20
A method of comparing first and second series of digitally stored values representing instantaneous amplitudes of band-limited signals that were sampled at substantially similar and regularly spaced moments in time to perform automated polarity correction in an audio system, comprising:
- analyzing the first series for first transient samples indicative of a transient event where the signal properties change significantly over time;
- analyzing the second series to find second transient samples indicative of the transient event;
- determining a natural absolute polarity of the transient event;
- if the first transient samples have a polarity inverted from the natural absolute polarity, inverting amplitude of the first series;
- and
- if the second transient samples have a polarity inverted from the natural absolute polarity, inverting amplitude of the second series.
A method of comparing first and second series of digitally stored values representing instantaneous amplitudes of band-limited signals that were sampled at substantially similar moments in time to perform automated polarity correction in an audio system, comprising:
- measuring a first DC bias of the first series;
- measuring a second DC bias of the second series;
- if the first DC bias is negative, inverting the amplitude of the first series;
- and
- if the second DC bias is negative, inverting the amplitude of the second series.
A sound processing system, comprising:
- a sound processing module configured to perform:
- analysis of a first series of samples for first transient samples indicative of a transient event where the signal properties change significantly over time;
- analysis of a second series of samples for second transient samples indicative of the transient event;
- determination of a natural absolute polarity of the transient event;
- inversion of amplitudes of the first series if the first transient samples have a polarity inverted from the natural absolute polarity;
- and
- inversion of amplitudes of the second series if the second transient samples have a polarity inverted from the natural absolute polarity.
A sound processing system, comprising:
- a sound processing module configured to perform:
- comparison of a first and a second series of digitally stored values representing instantaneous amplitudes of band-limited signals that were sampled at substantially similar and regularly spaced moments in time to perform automated polarity correction in an audio system, by at least:
- measurement of a first DC bias of the first series;
- measurement of a second DC bias of the second series;
- if the first DC bias is negative, inversion of the amplitude of the first series;
- and
- if the second DC bias is negative, inversion of the amplitude of the second series.
