Abstract
An adhesive label includes a polymeric first film layer that has an affinity for water. The label is useful in various labeling applications and especially adhesive labeling of reusable and recyclable containers which require removal of the label during a washing process in a warm or hot washing fluid.
Claims29
A label, comprising:
- (a) a film having a first surface and a second surface;
- wherein the film comprises a first film layer, the first film layer exhibiting a change in dimension in its water-absorbed state;
- and
- (b) a pressure sensitive adhesive layer having a first surface and a second surface, wherein the first surface of the adhesive layer is adhered to the second surface of the film, the adhesive layer having an adhesive force between the second surface of the adhesive layer and an outer surface of a container when the second surface of the adhesive layer is adhered to the outer surface of the container;
- wherein the dimensional change of the first film layer in its water-absorbed state exhibits a detaching force that is greater than the adhesive force when the container is immersed in a washing fluid having a temperature of about 80° C. for a period of about 3 minutes;
- wherein the first film layer comprises at least one thermoplastic polymer having a glass transition temperature in the range of 35 to 105° C.,
- wherein the first film layer has a water absorption as measured according to ASTM D570 of at least 1.7% by weight after immersion in water at a temperature of about 80° C. for at least about 2 hours;
- wherein the first film layer has an absolute areal dimensional change as measured according to ASTM D1204 of at least about 4% after immersion in water having a temperature of about 80° C. for a period of about 3 minutes;
- wherein the pressure sensitive adhesive exhibits at least one of a decrease in adhesion strength at temperatures above a room or ambient temperature and a decrease in adhesion strength on contact with a warm or hot washing fluid;
- and
- wherein the at least one thermoplastic polymer comprises an aromatic polyamide.
